Whether intended or not there are clearly suggestions of Beethoven's "Eroica" (at least the first two movements) in John Ottman's dramatic and very effective score for Bryan Singer's film, "Valkyrie." This is particularly evident with the incorporation of bass strings and percussion in the soundtrack's second cut, "Operation Valkyrie." And this would be totally appropriate. Ottman's music proves to be a good fit for one of the surprise films of 2008. Often the greatest heroes are those that have failed against insurmountable odds and their stories become a form of heroic tragedy. This was certainly part of Beethoven's inspiration, and is clearly the story in "Valkyrie." Ottman captures this mood in his own score that is powerful and stunning in places, but in the end yields to a somber conclusion. There might be a question about the order of the cuts on the album. "They'll Remember You" belongs at the end, as it is in the film, but that is a small complaint. Nicely produced and packaged by Varese Sarabande.
